A heat press (general) uses heat + pressure + time to transfer a design (e.g. via sublimation paper, heat-transfer vinyl, etc.) onto a substrate (like a T-shirt, ceramic tile, mouse pad, etc.).
A semi-automatic heat press is a hybrid between fully manual and fully automatic: some steps are manual (e.g. loading/unloading substrate, starting the press) while others are automatic (commonly, the platen will automatically lift/open after the preset time is over, or the press cycle may have “auto-open/auto-release” features).
This semi-automation reduces user fatigue and improves consistency vs a fully manual press, while still being more affordable and flexible than a fully automatic industrial press
