 Working Principle of a CO₂ Laser Tube

A CO₂ laser tube works based on gas excitation and stimulated emission:

  1. The tube contains a sealed gas mixture, typically:

    • Carbon Dioxide (CO₂)

    • Nitrogen (N₂)

    • Helium (He)

  2. A high-voltage electrical discharge excites the nitrogen molecules.

  3. Energy is transferred from nitrogen to CO₂ molecules.

  4. Excited CO₂ molecules emit photons at a wavelength of 10.6 µm.

  5. The photons bounce between mirrors inside the tube, amplifying the laser beam.

  6. One mirror partially transmits the beam, producing a focused laser output.

  • Glass or Metal Tube Body

  • Gas Mixture (CO₂, N₂, He)

  • Electrodes (Cathode & Anode)

  • High-Reflective Mirror

  • Output Coupler Mirror

  • Cooling Jacket (for water or air cooling)

  • Uses direct current (DC) power supply

  • Common in low to mid-power machines
